Did you know that 13th November is World Kindness Day?
Research has shown that kindness in the workplace not only increases productivity and job satisfaction, but according to the RAK Foundation carrying out kind acts will:
Reduce depression: Thinking about helping other people stops us worrying about ourselves.
Reduce pain: Helping releases endorphins, which are natural painkillers.
Reduce isolation: Helping others encourages human contact.
Reduce blood pressure.
Reduce anxiety: Good actions can lift mood and decrease social avoidance.
Reduce stress: Kind people have 23 percent less cortisol (the stress hormone) and age more slowly.
Here a couple of ideas for you to spread kindness in the workplace;
1. Say Hello!
It sounds simple, but can make saying hello or good morning with a smile when you arrive at work can make a positive impact on the working day.
2. Help A Colleague In Need
Pay attention to those around you and try to notice if someone is stressed or under the weather. Offer to lend a hand if you can, or maybe just a listening ear is all they need.
3. Compliment a Colleague
Maybe they’ve got a new hair cut or pair of shoes, or you could compliment them on a project they have recently completed.
4. Welcome New Staff
Remember being the newbie – not knowing anyone and taking lunch breaks alone? Inviting someone new along for lunch or involving them in office chit chat is a good way of helping ease the stress of starting a new job.
5. Give Praise Where Its Due
People are often quick to complain, but aren’t always as quick to dish out praise. Commend a teammate for a job well done, or you could even let their boss who may not realise how hard your colleagues been working.
